The sixth edition of IKEA’s Nytillverkad collection is coming in February and it looks amazing. This ongoing collection reimagines original IKEA designs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. With a range of chairs, tables, shelving units and other home goods, there will be something for everyone in this collection. I am extremely excited for this collection, and that is the main reason I wanted to write about it. The pieces I am most excited for have to be the MOFALLA foldable steel-tube chair, the bright red SOTENÄS armchair, and the GUTTANE tables.
Here’s a little bit of history to start out because learning about the history of companies that I like is cool. IKEA was founded in 1943 in Sweden. The about page on their website says: “IKEA offers well-designed, functional and affordable, high-quality home furnishing, produced with care for people and the environment.” And I can’t help but love the company vision: “to create a better everyday life for the many people.”
IKEA’s founder, Ingvar Kamprad, founded the company at age 17, initially selling goods such as pens and wallets and the rest is history. In 1953 IKEA adopted the process of flatpacking furniture. Making their customers assemble the furniture themselves actually became the solution to costly transportation problems, and the furniture was still very popular.
One of my favorite things to look at for furniture inspiration are vintage IKEA catalogs. In 1950 the first IKEA catalog was published in Sweden. Those yearly catalogs would be the main source of the company’s marketing material until 2021, when, sadly, the last printed version was published. You can even read at all the published issues on IKEA’s website right now as PDFs.
Anyone who has anything from IKEA knows the joy of putting together a drawer or shelf or bed frame (heavy sarcasm on the word joy). I do have a core memory of building an IKEA dresser with my wife that we bought when we got married, even though it took us way too long. All jokes aside, I know some of their furniture can be a huge pain to put together, however IKEA really does have a lot of gems in their archive.
If you are still here after the brief history lesson, thanks for sticking around. Now, back to these new vintage collections. I think these Nytillverkad collections are great options for anyone looking for mid-century modern style furniture at affordable prices. I love the idea of “new vintage” that IKEA has been running with. Furniture shopping is hard and expensive. Finding things that you like for your home that fit your style and don’t hurt your wallet seems to be getting more difficult every year, especially if you like mid-century modern or Bauhaus style interior design and furniture. Those specific styles can be very expensive and very difficult to find as well, particularly if you want real vintage pieces.
I love that IKEA is making designs like these more accessible. If you want to add some mid-century modern flair to your house and don’t know where to start, in my opinion the Nytillverkad collections are a great place to do so. These furniture collections just feel special, and I cannot wait to get my hands on some items that I have my eye on from the newest collection. The GUTTANE coffee and/or side tables are most definitely coming home with me when this newest addition to the collection releases
I really think all the pieces from these collections are phenomenal and well worth the money. I feel like a broken record at this point but if you take anything away from this article, let it be this: the IKEA Nytillverkad collections are great quality mid-century modern style designs at extremely affordable prices; the essence of what IKEA really is. These collections are a grand tribute to Kamprad’s original vision.
To finish off the article I want to share some of my favorite pieces available right now on IKEA’s website from past releases of the collection.
